Empowering Youth and Building a Bitcoin Economy in South Africa

In the picturesque coastal town of Mossel Bay, South Africa, a remarkable organization is making waves in the lives of marginalized youth. The Surfer Kids, a registered Non-Profit Organization (NPO), has been empowering young minds since 2010 through character-building activities, with surfing as their primary medium.

A Mission to Empower

The Surfer Kids’ mission statement is clear: “The empowerment of marginalized and impoverished youths through character-building activities that teach commitment and dedication.” This vision has driven the organization to create a comprehensive program that runs five days a week, with a team of dedicated staff and coaches from the local community.

A Community-Driven Initiative

The Surfer Kids is funded entirely through donations from local and international supporters, businesses, and partner organizations. One notable example is the Bitcoin Bowl, a state-of-the-art skate park built through a fundraising effort led by The Surfer Kids and Bitcoin Ekasi. This project was made possible by Block, Inc., a company owned by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey.

Bitcoin Ekasi: A New Era of Empowerment

Bitcoin Ekasi, an extension of The Surfer Kids NPO, aims to create a Bitcoin economy in the township. Inspired by Bitcoin Beach in El Salvador, Bitcoin Ekasi pays coaches’ salaries in Bitcoin and on-boards local vendors to accept Bitcoin as payment. This innovative approach empowers the community, promoting financial inclusion and economic growth.

A Thriving Bitcoin Economy

The Ekasi Center, a humble 3-roomed dwelling, is the hub of Bitcoin Ekasi’s activities. With Bitcoin miners, a lightning vending machine, and a thrift shop, the center is a testament to the community’s resourcefulness. The surrounding neighborhood boasts 15 shops that accept Bitcoin Lightning, demonstrating the growing adoption of this innovative technology.
